Obesity is a National Epidemic!
In Georgia, 36 percent of adults are overweight and another 29 percent are classified as obese. Combined, nearly 2/3 of Georgia's population is considered to be at an unhealthy weight. Furthermore, 1 in every 5 children in Georgia is obese. Nationally, Non-Hispanic black women and Hispanics have the highest rates of obesity (41.9% and 30.7%). Obesity is a contributing cause of many other health problems, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some types of cancer. These are some of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Obese persons require more costly medical care. This places a huge financial burden on our medical care system. |

Why is this Happening?
Society has changed; people are living less active lifestyles and eating more these days, which is contributing to the increase in obesity rates.
Depending on where people live, access to stores that offer affordable, healthy food selections can be a challenge. Unfortunately, those same neighborhoods may offer more restaurant and convenience store choices. The food is often cheaper and higher in calories than meals that are prepared in the home. A lack of access to parks and recreation centers make it harder for some to be physically active. |
